Ursus horribilis
The three bear species that live in Canada and the USA are the polar bear (Ursa maritimus), the brown, or grizzly, bear (Ursa horribilis), and the American black bear (Ursa americanus). Ursa horribilis is the bear featured in this lense. This magnificant powerful brownish-yellow bear of the uplands of western North America [syn: grizzly, grizzly bear, silvertip,silver-tip, Ursus horribilis, Ursus arctos horribilis.
The grizzly bear female or sow can have up to four cubs. These animals are very protective of their young. The sow will attack if she feels her cubs are being threatened. If you are hiking in an active grizzly bear territory please carry bear spray, and know how to use it.
Grizzly bears, as all types of bears are omnivores, as they eat both plants and animals. They will prey on larges mammels such as moose, elk and deer, but will eat what ever is available such as berries. They are very opportunistic. This is why feeding a bear is a very bad idea. If a bear learns and accepts that humans mean an easy food source, they will become conditioned not fear man. When a bear looses his fear of man that bear becomes very dangerous and eventually will have to be killed
